The Carolina Panthers won their first preseason game at home against the Houston Texans with a final score of 27-17.
The Panthers started the game with Derek Anderson as their quarterback who threw a first quarter touchdown pass to wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin. The Texans responded with running back Alfred Blue scoring a 16-yard rushing touchdown tying the game at the end of the first quarter.
Joe Webb played quarterback for the Panthers in the second quarter and threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to wide out Damiere Byrd. Kicker Graham Gano extended the Panthers lead by kicking a 45-yard field goal. The Texans would add a field goal of their own before halftime. The Panthers led 17-10 at the end of the first half.
Byrd caught his second touchdown pass of the game and gave the Panthers a 24-10 lead. Rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson scored his first NFL preseason touchdown by scrambling for 15 yards into the end zone. The Panthers led 24-17 at the end of the third quarter.
The Panthers scored the only points of the fourth quarter by kicking a 51-yard field goal.
Watson’s first preseason game resulted in a solid performance as he completed 15 passes and threw for 179 yards.
Panthers Running back Christian McCaffrey also made his NFL debut and carried the football seven times gaining 33 rushing yards.
The Panthers travel to Tennessee to take on the Titans on Saturday, Aug. 19 while the Texans host the New England Patriots that same day.
